What would happen if Slytherin's Locket were opened earlier?

As we see in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, when the Horcrux is opened a fearsome mass is blown from the locket and torments its attacker. But what do you think would happen if it weren't being attacked, or if it had fully overpowered its attacker?
