Distorted sound when playing ipod through dock?

I have a bush dock and the problem is with an ipod classic 160gb, it plays but the bass is overpowering, regardless of eq setting. I have a nano and it works fine with this dock. I haven't yet tried connecting to the dock via an audio jack because i can't find the lead, could it possibly be the apple bespoke connector thing thats the problem? Thanks
